The Don
Quixote Study Guide Page |
|
Don Quixote is perhaps the
longest novel you have ever read (or will ever read). However, time and
hard work pay off. The novel is touching, funny, sad, wise all at the same time.
As you work your way through the novel, I hope you will find this page to be a
useful aid.
I have prepared a list
of questions for you to examine as you read. You may wish to print it out and
keep it by your side as you read Don Quixote.
One of the most complicated aspects of
Don Quixote is its narrative structure. Don Quixote, as you will
see, is a novel that makes us question the relationship between fact and fiction, truth
and imagination. The form in which Cervantes presents Don Quixote is quite
complicated. For a visual representation of the narrative structure, be sure to
examine the narrative structure and metafiction page.
The characters embody the issues of
imagination, artifice, truth, fact and fiction. Examine the relationship between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza and also the page on Dulcinea.
Finally, I have prepared a lengthy
section dedicated to transformations of Don Quixote from the
Renaissance to the present day. A question to ask yourself as you peruse through the
many incarnations of the Don Quixote story is how readings of Don Quixote
has changed over time.
