There is a long article beginning on the front page of the June 5, 1996
Washington Post concerning the seat belts on certain Chrysler Corporation
products. The article is quite lengthy and begins by saying:
"U.S., Chrysler Going to Court Over Seat Belts
By Warren Brown, Washington Post Staff Writer
The Justice Department took Chrysler Corp. to court yesterday in a
high-stakes confrontation over federal auto safety standards after the
company refused to recall 91,000 cars to strengthen their seat belts.
Chrysler welcomed the suit, saying it is an opportunity to show that some
federal tests to check compliance with safety standards are flawed.
The civil suit, filed in U.S. District Court here on behalf of the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, demands the recall of 91,000 Chrysler
Cirrus and Dodge Stratus passenger cars made early in the 1995 model year."
The article goes at length on to elaborate on the technical details,
Chrysler's position, and the Government's position.
