Stephanie and Howard DeVoe in 2005

This web site contains the results of my research on my family history. My family tree includes my father's family, DeVoe, and my mother's family, Josselyn. Among my ancestors are the families Burnett, Durrant, Dwelley, Gay, Hannah, Morse, Oakley, Stockbridge, Troup, and Walpole. The Surname Index contains the complete list. I hope the information will be of interest to others doing research on these families.

Please note that I have not attempted to include all known family members, since that is not practical. Instead I've concentrated on persons in my direct ancestral line and in some cases their siblings, and on Stephanie's ancestors.

My interest in genealogy began when one of my elementary school teachers asked her students to draw their family trees. I was surprised to discover that nineteenth-century genealogies existed for both sides of my family: the monumental Genealogy of the De Vaux Family published by Thomas F. De Voe in 1885; and an 1853 history of Hanover, Massachusetts containing a genealogy of the Josselyn family. I've been collecting information on my family's history ever since.

After retiring in 2002 from my position as Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Maryland, I was able to devote more time to this project. The research has been greatly facilitated by internet resources. I enter the information into a genealogy database created by The Master Genealogist from Wholly Genes, and publish it on this web site in the form of linked web pages created by Second Site. I highly recommend these two wonderful programs.

For persons who are living, or not known to have died, only the names of parents and children are shown; other details are omitted on this web site. Space limitations on the server prevent me from including numerous images of photos and documents that are part of the Family History database. If you are interested in images related to a particular person or persons, you can contact me through the e-mail link or mailing address located at the bottom of each page.
