About This Site

This site was created by Julia Lehnert, a student at the University of Maryland's College of Library and Information Services, (CLIS), to satisfy a requirement for a core course, Information Technology. I am a candidate in the History/Library Services Joint Masters Program (HiLS), and I decided to use this assignment to delve deeper into the history of Mount Vernon Place, an area that has always held a particular fascination for me as a native Baltimorean and student of local history.

The establishment of the Mount Vernon Cultural District in 1997 gave me the opportunity to perform the historical research I wanted to do and to promote the new cultural consortium. While each of the six member institutions of the consortium has a web presence, there was no unified site to introduce visitors to the physical beauty and historical associations of the Mount Vernon Place neighborhood and direct them to the six Cultural District institutions located there. I hope the information and photographs presented here reveal not only the traditional charm of Mount Vernon Place, but also the excitement of a vibrant neighborhood in the heart of the city which offers activities, events, programs and diversions to suit almost any taste.

I have listed the sources I consulted in my research on the For Further Information... page of this site. My special thanks go to Randolph L. Hutter, who took all photographs on these pages.

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments on the material presented here; please contact me at the email address listed on the home page.
