Welcome to Mount Vernon Place, referred to by many as the heart and soul of Baltimore. Here, Baltimoreans built the first large-scale monument in the nation to George Washington, and in the great townhouses that bordered the Washington Monument and park, Baltimore society made its home. Thanks to the efforts of many people, Mount Vernon Place has weathered the test of time and today retains its beauty and historic character. But life in Mount Vernon Place did not stop at the dawn of the 20th century, and today the neighborhood is home to six dynamic cultural institutions that have much to offer any visitor, whether native Baltimorean or tourist from out-of-town.
Come along for a brief review of the history of the Monument and surrounding neighborhood, a look at several points of historical and architectural interest, and sketches of the six institutions comprising the new Mount Vernon Cultural District.
