Walt Whitman

(1819 - 1892)

Walt Whitman was born in Long Island, New York. In addition to his work as a poet, he was an essayist, journalist, teacher, humanist, and volunteer nurse. He incorporated the beliefs of both transcendentalism and realism in his work. Many call Whitman the father of “free verse.”
