English 280 will introduce students to the facts and phenomena of the English language. Students will learn about the structure and history of the English language, its rhetorical and discourse patterns, and the kinds of variation it presents. Topics for discussion will include types of language use, the writing and sound systems of the language, its national, regional and social diversity, and the ramifications of its status as a world language.
