Lazy of world and character building. Someone did that already, and let us take advantage of that. Fan fiction was actually a good exercise in writing, characterization, and world view agreement. The characters have to behave the in a way that is believable in the original story, and the assumption you are using in the story must agree with the world view of the original story.
